Why older Elmwood Park homes call for a careful plumber
Elmwood Park grew fast after the Second World War, and the median home in the village was built in 1955. Roughly three out of four homes here predate 1970, and about 29 percent were built before 1940. That mix means original cast iron drains, clay sewer laterals and old galvanized supply lines are still in service in many houses.
Old pipe fails in predictable ways. Galvanized steel narrows from the inside until the shower is a trickle. Cast iron scales and catches grease. Clay tile joints let tree roots in. A plumber who knows what a 70 year old house usually hides can diagnose faster and repair the right section instead of guessing.
Half of the housing is single-family detached, and the rest is split among two-flats, small walk-up buildings and larger apartment buildings. If you manage a multi-unit building, our commercial plumbing page explains how we handle after-hours calls.
